Urbanization

February 20, 2009 by The Penguin

written July 1, 2007

I open my window,
tall buildings block the view of the blue hills far away,
i can no longer see the trees, the flowers,
and the birds that sing in the bushes.
i can no longer taste the smell of the soil
that the north wind carries when it rains in the hills…
i look outside the window as i lie in my bed at night
i cannot feel the soothing night breeze,
and the moon n the stars hide themselves
behind these tall buildings.

my room, my little heaven
is now starting to suffocate me.
and all my poems that are yet unborn
are lost.

A Summer Evening

A summer evening. Nothing like it. The sun is about to set and the sky is hued with orange and greenish blue…..Magical.

“Can see everything from up here”, Randy was euphoric, “…the entire valley…the green fields, clumps of trees, river, houses..i think there’s my home right there…….and the sky is just awesome man”.

Randy and Jerry look behind them. More hills…the hills just went on and on, one hill after another…and a long stretch of mountains far away.

“Someday i’ll just keep on walking…climb every hills, every mountains…Just go on and on…”, Jerry was all dreamy.

“Get a job pal…earn some money first…then we’ll talk about your trekking and all.”

“Always wanted to be a programmer. Suddenly I don’t care anymore. Just want to write stories…draw, sing a song, write lyrics, watch the sun set…create art…i feel so alive doing these stuffs”

“You depressed or something?”, Randy said. A chuckle was evident.

“Nah! life’s good…just feels different…i guess everything changes”

Jerry looked up at the patch of dark clouds beginning to gather overhead. “You carried an umbrella?”

“Didn’t seem like it’d rain in the mornin did it. Think we should head back home.”

“We’re gonna get so drenched now”, Jerry started laughing, “but who cares!”

Sneaking up from behind

I’m sitting in my room, alone, looking outside the window, lost in my thoughts and smiling like hell when i sense something..but what ..it felt strange…i turn around….my friend is standing behind me, smiling at me….I HATE THAT!!! I HATE THAT!!! AND I HATE THAT!!! I HATE PEOPLE SNEAKING UP FROM BEHIND!!!!

So the next afternoon, i lock my room from inside. Soon enough, I hear someone knocking at my door. I hadn’t heard any footsteps on the stairs or the sound of the main gate opening…he was trying to sneak on me again!…but since the door was locked he HAD to knock…hahahahahaha…i keep quiet and do not open the door..he calls my name…no way, not going to happen pal……he goes to the living room and calls me in my mobile…i do not pick up….after a few more banging at my door, he leaves…..

He calls me in the evening…he is fuming…but I was ready…

“You were here in the afternoon re?….sh**..i know what might’ve happened….i was wearing my headphone n listening to some songs and so couldn’t hear you….hahaha…sorry…it’s so funny….hahaha”

Dear Readers, i would never do such a thing to my friends….but it isn’t such a bad idea after all, is it?…maybe he’ll stop sneaking up on me then….hahahahahaha…..

The Innocent Stalker

He followed the girls intently through the dark road. There were no streetlamps …the only lights were the occasional headlights of the passing vehicles. Two girls, probably in their late teens……. He didn’t know why he was following them. It was completely against his nature to act this way. But he was feeling strange today. He wanted to have a little fun.

But what should he do? He started thinking. His mind was blank. A car passed by from behind. He noticed that his shadow overtook the girls for a brief instant of time…hmm, the girls could see his shadow for a brief interval. His eyes glowed. He just had a wicked plan. He chuckled at the idea…… He still couldn’t understand why he was doing this. This is not me, this is just not me, he said to himself. But the plan was so wicked that he couldn’t get it off his mind. He had to try it, he just had to.

He waited for another vehicle to pass by from behind. Soon enough, he heard a motorcycle approaching. He threw his hand up in the air and started waving them wildly in all possible ways. He looked ahead. His faithful shadow danced wildly before the girls. Perfect. The motorcycle whirred past him. He waited. The girls just walked normally. No change in pace. No response, no nothing. Strange!…didn’t they see my shadow, he thought. Another car approached. He repeated the same antic again. Then he waited…. No reponse. He was just thinking about giving up when one of the girls looked back. Great!…He acted normally, as if nothing had happened. After a few seconds, the other girl looked back as well. He couldn’t decide whether they were frightened or not. After a while, they whispered something to each other. What are they doing, he was confused…
And suddenly he sensed it! They had increased their pace. Ha Ha! He started walking fast himself, and while doing so he intentionally made a noise everytime his shoes hit the ground so that the girls could hear it. What the hell am I doing, he thought. But there was no backing out now. It was wicked, but fun. Am I bad?, he thought. Nah! This is an innocent prank.

Suddenly the girls started running! He hadn’t intended the prank to go this far. This was unexpected.

“Wait!” He shouted.

The girls now started screaming.

“Wait!” He started running, trying to catch up with them. “All this was just a joke…Wait!”

But the girls didn’t stop. They started crying for help.

He stopped running. He was suddenly afraid. Are there people around? He surveyed the place. Far away he could see dark outlines of a bunch of people..and the girls were running towards them.

He didn’t waste a second and started running in the opposite direction.
