I want to write something serious, without my trademark foolish hahas and hehes. I believe serious essay-style philosophical writings are what tests your intellectual capability. But I’m not ready for that yet. I feel shallow most of the time. You got to read a lot of books before you’re ready. A good writer should have knowledge of many things – natural history, philosophy, history, geography, human behaviour, science…everything. For example, how would you describe a sky in your novel when you have very little knowledge about clouds and weather patterns. This applies to everything else. And there’s always the vocabulary. Until a few years back, I used to think that I was never going to use words and sentences in my writings that would require people to go look for their dictionary, or that would make them ponder till they go mad. I wanted my writings to be equally understandable to an adult as well as to a kid. But now I know that this not how it works. You cannot please everybody. Expressing yourself in a powerful and balanced way is what counts. And for that you need to throw in some words now and then, and twist some sentences. Besides, a kid wouldn’t understand philosophy anyway! …mood. I can write this article in a hundred different ways. It all depends on my mood. Sometimes your sense of expression is so sharp and well balanced that you wish you could stay like that forever. While at other times you sound like a donkey braying. And oh btw, you’ll find donkey brays almost everywhere in this blog! (at least until I get better at writing that is). Never write when you’re not inspired.
But all this is not that hard to learn, just requires a little bit of effort on your part. Perfection requires effort. When I read books and magazines I cannot help but admire all those articles, so well balanced, awe inspiring and with such philosophical depth. Looking at them, I realize my limitations…I realize my destiny.

I have that something-missing feeling about the above writing as well…what, I do not know…but it’s not balanced somehow! A good writer, like the one I know from the forum(!), would’ve turned this into a masterpiece…or maybe, i’m just paranoid and too much self-conscious

You’re not making a documentary. You don’t need books and documentaries to learnd about clouds. It’s about creating something. I agree that good writers know a lot of things, but fact knowing has nothing to do with creation.
“I’m an educated person. I’ve read alot.”
“Oh, have you? How many you’d re-read?”
“3 or 4.”
I just don’t give a crap about people having read tones of books.
Quality versus quantity. As a creator, quality always wins. Philosophy it’s about having a brain and using it.

Ah! my first ‘critic’!
..i’ve been waiting for this day for a long long time
…I agree (at least partially) when you say that creation is something separate from learning and that it’s quality that counts. You definitely don’t need to read tons of books to write …but there comes a point when you get stuck with your limited knowledge and experiences. That’s what I was talking about. You need to expand your horizons… there’s always room for improvement, and studying helps you get there… and besides, I’m pretty sure that whatever you create thesedays is rooted in books you’ve read and things you’ve experienced in your past, don’t you think…you cannot create without learning in the first place!.. Creativity is fundamentally innate, but knowledge isn’t!
…and welcome pal, you’re my first critic… I should give you a gift or something, but I’m broke!

But you’re right…I shouldn’t stress myself out over reading a lot of books.

‘Cuz even if you did read tons, you wouldn’t know how to write/create unless you wrote something yourself. And once you start writing, you probably flow more with what you are writing at that time, and not with what you had read somewhere in the past.
Reading helps, but I think the more you write, the better it becomes, unless of course you are snow. lol

ok agreed
…but reading does make us richer at the subconscious level.. and that shows in the writing… but the process shouldn’t be made too ‘academic’..if someone is constantly aware that he/she is reading to increase his/her writing skills, that’s no fun at all… not much disagreement exist i’m sure… but well.. writing really tops it all off *ahem* i guess… oh well, so much for my pride…
…btw, you write beautifully …and i want to sound as flattering as possible
